Florida in the United States has approximately 70 species of grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae). These insects are known to be extremely common in the natural environmental areas of the state as well as in and around parks and gardens. Although there is a large variety of species, some are known to be scarce, and others are considered endangered, or exclusive to Florida. Grasshoppers are found in abundance within the local ecosystem of Florida and therefore are an important resource of food for the wildlife, particularly the bird and reptile population.
